Owner Tales

When The Unthinkable Happens

Scuba instructor, and World Cat owner, Steve Oatman, was recently rescued at sea by the U.S. Coast Guard. Oatman was searching for Megalodon shark teeth off the coast of Bald Head Island, NC when multiple safety equipment failures put his life at risk. Quick-thinking Oatman remained calm and managed to surface, but due to strong currents, was nowhere near his boat. Fortunately, his wife was waiting on their catamaran, and when he didn’t return when expected, she made a distress call.

See him talk about the experience here.

CAT'n Around Tips

Essential Safety Tips for Boating

Even though you’re enjoying nice breezes and water all around, boating in hot weather comes with its own set of challenges. Even water temperatures can be steamy in late summer. Here are tips for staying safe and comfortable in the heat:

  • Keep an eye on weather forecasts and heat advisories, and avoid boating during the hottest parts of the day if possible.
  • Ensure your boat is equipped with plenty of water, ice, and shade before setting out.
  • Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, light-colored clothing.
  • Protect your feet by wearing shoes or sandals on-board; boat decks are notorious for getting really hot.
  • Wear a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses with UV protection, and regularly apply sunscreen with a high SPF. Reapply every two hours and after swimming.
  • Take breaks in shaded areas of the boat to avoid prolonged sun exposure.
  • Take a dip in the water (but always ensure the boat is anchored safely and someone is watching swimmers).
  • Use portable fans or misters to create a cool breeze.
  • Drink plenty of water, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
  • Avoid alcohol and caffeine, both of which can dehydrate you.
  • Consume fruits and vegetables with high water content, such as watermelon, cucumbers, oranges, and strawberries.

It’s also important to know the signs of heat-related illness. Be aware of symptoms like dizziness, nausea, headache, excessive sweating, or confusion. If you or someone else experiences these, seek shade, hydrate, and cool down immediately. Regularly check on your boating companions—especially children and elderly individuals—to ensure everyone is staying cool and hydrated.

A Better Boating Experience

If you’re a boater, you know all about the pounding, slapping, exhausting ride of a monohull boat. With a World Cat power catamaran, you get a smoother, more stable ride. That means no more physical abuse – for you or your family and friends. You can stay on the water longer, and go so much farther. You’ll come back with more energy, and fewer bruises. And, along with that comfort, you’ll have the confidence to head out in conditions that keep other boaters on shore. Don’t take our word for it, take a sea trial and experience the World Cat advantages for yourself!

Mackinac Island, MI

I'm an image

Nestled in the serene waters of Lake Huron, right between Michigan’s two peninsulas, Mackinac Island is a gem of the Great Lakes that offers a unique blend of natural beauty, rich history, and timeless charm. With its ban on motor vehicles, stunning Victorian architecture, and lush landscapes, Mackinac Island feels like a journey back in time, offering a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of modern life.

One of the most distinctive features of Mackinac Island is its ban on motor vehicles. Instead of cars, you'll find horse-drawn carriages, bicycles, and pedestrians leisurely exploring the island's 3.8 square miles. The absence of cars preserves the island’s historic charm and tranquility and contributes to a slower pace of life, encouraging visitors to fully immerse themselves in the island's beauty and history.

Mackinac Island boasts a rich history that dates back to the Native American tribes who originally inhabited the region. A visit to Fort Mackinac offers a glimpse into the island's military past. Established by the British during the American Revolutionary War, the fort now serves as a museum with exhibits and reenactments that bring history to life.

The island is also home to the iconic Grand Hotel, a National Historic Landmark. Opened in 1887, this grand dame of resorts is famous for its massive porch, the longest in the world. Staying at the Grand Hotel is like stepping into a different era, with its opulent decor, afternoon tea service, and nightly dancing in the ballroom.

Beyond its historical treasures, Mackinac Island is a haven for nature lovers. The island's perimeter is encircled by an 8.2-mile paved trail, perfect for biking or leisurely walks with stunning views of the lake and the rocky shoreline. Don't miss Arch Rock, a natural limestone arch soaring 146 feet above the water, offering breathtaking views of the straits.

Mackinac Island State Park, which covers over 80% of the island, is a treasure trove of scenic beauty. Explore the park's numerous trails, lush forests, and serene meadows. The park also includes Fort Holmes, the highest point on the island, providing panoramic vistas that are especially stunning at sunset.

Reaching Mackinac Island is an adventure in itself. Accessible only by ferry, small aircraft, or private boat, the most popular route is by water from Mackinaw City or St. Ignace, both offering spectacular views of the Mackinac Bridge and the shimmering waters of Lake Huron, setting the stage for the island's magical atmosphere. For World Cat lovers, there are plenty of places to dock your boat in the Mackinac Island harbor!
