Top Whale-Watching Spots in the U.S.

Photo courtesy of Mike Carroll, whale watching in NC aboard his World Cat

The U.S. boasts some of the best whale-watching opportunities in the world. From the rugged coasts of the Pacific Northwest to the warm waters of Hawaii, these majestic creatures are often seen breaching and fluking in their natural habitats. Whether you're an avid marine enthusiast or simply looking for an unforgettable experience, here are the top whale-watching destinations in the U.S.

  1. Monterey Bay, California: Monterey Bay is a prime spot for year-round whale watching. Located along California's central coast, the bay attracts diverse marine life thanks to its deep underwater canyon. Gray whales migrate through the area in winter and spring, while humpback and blue whales dominate the summer and fall months. You can book tours from Monterey or Santa Cruz for an up-close look at these gentle giants.Best time to visit:April to November for humpbacks and blue whales, December to April for gray whales.
  2. Cape Cod, Massachusetts: The waters off Cape Cod are teeming with life, making it one of the best places on the East Coast to see whales. Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary, located just off the Cape, is a hot spot for humpback, fin, and minke whales. Whale-watching tours from Provincetown are particularly popular. Best time to visit:Mid-April to October.
  3. San Juan Islands, Washington: The San Juan Islands, situated in the Puget Sound, are a haven for orcas (killer whales). Known as "resident orcas," these whales are frequently seen from May to September. In addition to orcas, you might spot minke whales, humpbacks, and gray whales in the area. Kayaking tours are a unique way to experience the marine life here. Best time to visit:Late spring to early fall.
  4. Maui, Hawaii: The warm, clear waters of Maui attract thousands of humpback whales each winter. These whales migrate from Alaska to Hawaii to breed and give birth, making Maui a premier destination for whale watching. Tours often leave from Lahaina Harbor, and lucky visitors might even spot whales from the shore.Best time to visit:December to May.
  5. Kodiak Island, Alaska: Alaska’s vast coastline is ideal for observing whales in their element. Kodiak Island is a favorite spot for humpback, gray, and orca sightings. The cool, nutrient-rich waters of the Gulf of Alaska draw massive pods of whales, often accompanied by playful sea otters and puffins. Best time to visit:May to September.

While whales can be seen on from both coasts, the southeast coast isn't as famous for whale watching as other parts of the U.S., but its coastal waters play a vital role in the lifecycle of certain species. Sightings might be rarer, but they can be just as thrilling for those lucky enough to witness these incredible creatures.

A Better Boating Experience

If you’re a boater, you know all about the pounding, slapping, exhausting ride of a monohull boat. With a World Cat power catamaran, you get a smoother, more stable ride. That means no more physical abuse – for you or your family and friends. You can stay on the water longer, and go so much farther. You’ll come back with more energy, and fewer bruises. And, along with that comfort, you’ll have the confidence to head out in conditions that keep other boaters on shore. Don’t take our word for it, take a sea trial and experience the World Cat advantages for yourself!
