Cat’n Around® Tips: Keeping Youth Safe on the Water

Essential Tips for Keeping Youth Safe on the Water

For our World Cat family, boating with children creates lasting memories and introduces them to the joys of being on the water. However, ensuring their safety should be the top priority for any boating excursion.

Whether it’s a serene lake outing or an adventurous sea voyage, here are our best safety tips to keep in mind when boating with children:

1. Life Jackets: A non-negotiable essential. Life jackets are to boating what seat belts are to cars – indispensable. Ensure that every child wears a properly fitted and Coast Guard-approved life jacket at all times while on the boat.

2. Education and Preparation: Teach children about basic boating safety rules and procedures. Explain the importance of staying seated while the boat is moving, how to hold onto railings or handles, and what to do in case of an emergency.

3. Supervision: Designate responsible adults to supervise children constantly while on the boat. Younger children should always be within arm’s reach, especially if they are not strong swimmers.

4. Weather Awareness: Keep an eye on weather forecasts before and during the trip. Be prepared to cut the outing short if storms are predicted. Explain to children the significance of changing weather conditions and what safety measures should be taken in such situations.

5. Safety Equipment Check: Regularly inspect and maintain safety equipment on the boat. Ensure that fire extinguishers, first aid kits, and communication devices are readily accessible and in working condition.

6. Sun Protection: Protect children from the sun by applying sunscreen, providing hats, sunglasses, and lightweight clothing that covers their skin. Also, ensure they stay hydrated by providing plenty of water.

7. Safe Boarding and Disembarking: Teach children how to board and disembark from the boat safely. Ensure they understand the proper procedures for getting on and off without risking falls or injuries.

8. Stay Clear of Propellers: Make sure children understand the dangers of propellers. Explain that they should never enter the water near the back of the boat, and create clear boundaries to prevent them from accidentally getting too close.

9. Boating Rules and Regulations: Familiarize yourself and your children with local boating laws and regulations. Explain navigational markers and what they signify to avoid potential hazards.

10. Emergency Plan: Prepare and discuss an emergency plan with children. Teach them how to call for help and what to do in case someone falls overboard.

Boating with children can be thrilling, but safety should always come first. By following these safety tips and instilling a culture of responsibility and awareness in your children, you can ensure enjoyable and risk-free experiences on the water. After all, a safe voyage is a happy voyage!
